Geographical Overview

The Islamic Republic of Iran is located in Southwest Asia and is part of the Middle East, covering an area of over 1,648,195 square kilometers, making it the sixteenth largest country in the world by area. Geographically, Iran is in the southern half of the northern temperate zone. About 90% of the country’s land is within the Iranian plateau. The terrain of Iran is generally mountainous and semi-arid with an average elevation of over 1200 meters above sea level.
